Under the Covers
Feb 11, 2008 by Nick
I like a lot of things about music. One of my favorite things to do is check out cool cover songs by some of my favorite bands. I think good bands can do a great job covering songs that you may have never thought could sound good or you may have never heard of. It is also a great way to see the kind of music that may have influenced the bands you love. There is also a dark side to cover songs. Bands that have no original music that is worth a shit have been known to release a cover song to get their record played and then are never heard from again. If you don’t believe me please refer to Alien Ant Farm and their cover of “Smooth Criminal” by Michael Jackson and feel free to name one other song by that band that anyone other than their family members has heard of.
There are a ton of cool cover songs that I really love and I am going to do you, the reader, a favor and list 10 really cool covers. These can all be found on records that you can buy at your local record store or from Amazon mp3.
Do yourself a favor and check some of these out. Do yourself another favor and never listen to the songs below. These might be the worst cover songs ever made and the artists who made them should be arrested and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

Nick

Oops, sorry about the above comment. I really enjoyed your list but don’t believe that I’ve heard any of them. I will know bust a few on you off the top of my head that I love.
The Band (Baby) Don’t do it Marvin Gaye
Soul Asylum Sexual Healing Marvin Gaye
Matthew Sweet Do Ya ELO
Postal Service Against all odds Phil Collins
Talking Heads Take me to the river Al Green
Lemonheads Mrs. Robinson Simon and Garfunkel
Indigo Girls Romeo and Juliet Dire Straits
U2 Sattelite of Love Velvet Underground
Jenny Lewis Handle with care Traveling Wilburys
Foo Fighters Baker Street Gerry Rafferty
I know that the Lemonheads pick is a bit played out but it’s still fucking great. I would also like to mention multiple versions of Wild Horses (Flying Burrito Brothers and the Sundays). I could go on with this for awhile as I have a true affinity for covers as well.
Haha I love you. Finally someone who says what everyone one else with half a brain is thinking!
