Aerosmith and AC/DC
Nov 10, 2009 by Dave
First things first. Nick’s a dick. I find it real interesting that when provided with an open forum to discuss his thoughts on music he wastes an entire column to bash me. (Nick’s Article “Dave Sucks”) Firstly, I’ll defend myself by saying the that Nick wants to berate me for some guilty pleasures after writing an entire article on the subject. Secondly, everything he mentioned that I “like” is not even on my Zune, whereas all of his not-so guilty pleasures and are locked and loaded in his iPod. I know for fact that Nick needs to hear Nickleback’s “Rockstar” in order to carpe diem, which he shockingly left off his guilty pleasures list. Hmmm, interesting?
Now to the task at hand, actually writing an article about my views on music. I was trying to think back to what may have been my first favorite band. I can go back to some songs that I liked as a child such as Thriller or Weird Al songs. But as far as a band that I could say was my favorite It always comes down to either Aerosmith or AC/DC. Most specifically two albums, Aerosmith “Pump” and AC/DC “Back in Black”. To this day these albums reign in my top 20 and maybe higher. I think part of what makes these albums so special is that they remind me of hanging out with my uncle when I kid. He always had one of these cassettes loaded in the tape deck in his car and whenever we go somewhere I would rock out in the back seat. I always felt like these albums helped change the way I thought about music and helped mold my current tastes. Interestingly enough both of these albums were also part of a reboot for each of the bands. AC/DC obviously replacing Bon Scott with Brian Johnson and Aerosmith becoming a musical force once again after suffering through drug problems, losing band members and lackluster performance of the “Done with Mirrors” album.
OK, enough nostalgia, fast forward to the present day and these albums has withstood the test of time. They are great, heavy, kick ass albums that are full of great songs. The songs off these albums are staples on classic rock radio and I challenge you to find someone who hasn’t heard “Janie’s got a Gun” or “Back in Black”. These two bands where pinnacle in the molding of the music of the era and influential in the movements to follow such as grunge. When it comes to AC/DC and Aerosmith for me there is no such thing as a guilty pleasure.
Well, until next week pop in “Highway to Hell”, skip to “Shot Down in Flames” and crank it to 11; I’m not sure if that metaphor applies to car stereos, but you get the point.
Later,
Dave

My pocket is crammed with lint and two-copper pennies. I will save the lint for the trash can and share my two cents. Back in Black should be only be re-produced and cut on 24k gold disc’s, and sold through Christie’s as a all time claissic. On the other hand, “Pump” should printed on discounted Charmin for the multitude to wipe their ass with.
Sentementality aside, Back in Black is one of the 10 Greatest albums ever produced and recorded. If you meet a new guy at work and he tells you he doesn’t own a copy of Back in Black, you should have the right to turn him into HR for an application for his own “special” stall in the bathroom. It is a stright forward rock album that doesn’t try to do anything too fancy, it just rocks! As an album it is self aware. So many albums, and bands for that matter, try to do too much,; but not Back in Black. It is, what it is…and nothing more; nothing less. its almost perfect. There is something beauitful about someone who says, yeah, I am from the southside of Indy and proud of it motherfucker.” That is, Back in Black!
Pump on the other hand got it’s balls cut off by the vet and then kicked in the teeth by the brat little shit next door. It is self endulgent pappy crap! It is over produced, over style-lized, and just too much of nothing good. Aerosmith was a great band, but this album was a cross over into a mainstream “brittany” territory that just makes me sick when I think about it. Strings and Horns do not belong on a rock album. Pump = lipstick on a pig!
Thanks for the comment Aaron, your two cents is always welcome here. I’m glad we share similar opinions on “Back in Black” and I can tell you have a strong passion for music, which is always welcomed here at RM. Although I disagree with your views on “Pump” I will say that there’s ample room to bitch about Aerosmith but better places to start, such as “Get a Grip”. I’m not saying your argument isn’t valid, but “Get a Grip” make “Pump” look like “Master of Puppets.” Once again thanks for stopping by we really appreciate your support.
