RM Shuffle for December 28, 2009
Dec 28, 2009 by Nick
Here is one last shuffle from me to end 2009. Take some of the money you got for Christmas and buy these tunes.
The River’s Gonna Run – Buddy & Julie Miller
Buddy is one of the best guitarist/songwriters working in Nashville today. He has played with the likes of Steve Earle, Emmylou Harris, and Lucinda Williams among others. He has been making great music on his own and with his wife for years. This song is from their debut album together in 2001. This couple is making some really good music together and apart. This song is just one of many great songs they have.
Chicago Promenade – Jason Isbell
I was disappointed to hear Jason left the Drive by Truckers a few years ago but I must say he made one hell of an album when he left. Sirens of the Ditch is a great roots record that highlights Isbell’s songwriting skills. This is my favorite cut from the album.
I’m Amazed – My Morning Jacket
MMJ has been a band that I have dabbled in for years but their latest album, Evil Urges, is my favorite album they have made. I’m Amazed is a great song filled with big huge classic rock riffs. It has big hooks and easily could be a staple on rock radio. You will want to put this song on repeat the minute you listen to it.
The Core – Eric Clapton
When you think of the classic album Slowhand it is easy to only remember the hits like Cocaine, Lay Down Sally, and Wonderful Tonight but I think the best song on the entire album is the Core. This song clocks in at over eight minutes and features Marcy Levy sharing lead vocals with Eric on this song. It of course features Clapton getting nasty on the guitar and a surprisingly cool sax solo that segues nicely into a ferocious Clapton solo. The album was produced by the legendary Glyn Johns in case you were wondering.
Rodeo Clown – John Mellencamp
For all of you jack asses that wish Mellencamp would keep his mouth shut about politics this one is for you. This song was released as a hidden bonus track on the Freedom’s Road album. It is basically a shit talking song to George Bush and it is great sonically and lyrically. It goes to show that Mellencamp does not need to be writing about pink houses, small towns or scarecrows to be an effective songwriter. It is not 1982 and Mellencamp is done writing about how it hurts so good. He is observing the world around him and writing about it.
Those are the songs and you are welcome. See you in 2010 with hundreds of more great songs.
Later,
Nick
