RM Shuffle for January 13, 2010
Jan 13, 2010 by Nick
I made a resolution for 2010 and it was to provide you with an even nastier selection of music than I did in 2009. I know it will be tough to do but I think I am up to the challenge. I am going to start the new year out with a soul theme. I love soul music and I figured I should give you a little taste of some soul music that I love. Enjoy the jams.
Marvin Gaye – Got To Give It Up, Part 1
I was actually turned onto this song about a year ago when I saw Justin Timberlake sing it on TV. He did a fantastic job and I immediately downloaded the original. Listen to this song and then to Michael Jackson’s “Off The Wall” album and tell me he was not influenced by this Marvin Gaye.
Otis Redding – You Don’t Miss Your Water
I think I have made it clear that I think Otis Redding is the greatest soul singer of all time. I could have picked about 20 of his songs but I really love this one. It has been covered by artists such as The Black Crowes, The Byrds, and Percy Sledge but none of them can do it quite like Otis does it. You can find this song and the fabulous album “Otis Blue/Otis Redding Sings Soul”. If you do not own this album you are stupid. I do not know how else to put it.
Stevie Wonder – Boogie On Reggae Woman
I love Stevie Wonder but I did not want to pick one his songs you have already heard a thousand times. This song was released in 1974. Stevie was experimenting with a lot of different sounds at that time and he had definitely was no longer “Little” Stevie Wonder. This might not be the typical early Motown sounding Stevie Wonder but I think you will like it.
Wilson Pickett – Hey Jude
Now I don’t want to say this version is better than the original version but I am telling you right now this version is flat out nasty. Cut at the world famous Muscle-Shoals studio in Alabama Pickett definitely makes this version all his own. If you like the guitar playing on this song it might because Duane Allman is playing guitar on this track. This song is one for the ages.
Sly and the Family Stone – Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)
When it comes to funk music it pretty much starts and stops with Sly and the Family Stone. He cranked out some unbelievable albums in the 1970′s. This cut is as funky as any of his songs and works best when played very very loud. Even though he has lost his mind in the past 20 years we should remember him for the great music he produced in the 70′s and this song is a great place to start.
Once again I amaze even myself with diversity in music I provide you with week in and week out. Get yourself a big dose of soul music and see what you think. Next week you will be able to put on your black Megadeth t-shirt while reading Dave’s selections.
Later,
Nick
