RM Shuffle for January 27, 2010
Jan 27, 2010 by Nick
Hopefully you all enjoyed Aaron’s selections from his Shuffle last week. He had some interesting selections that I was not expecting. I will try to match the quality of his selections this week in my shuffle. So without further delay here are my selections for the week.
Little Feat – Roll Um Easy
I have taken a liking to Little Feat over the past couple of years. I am sad it took me so long to jump on their bandwagon, but better late than never. Roll Um Easy is my favorite track off of the seminal album “Dixie Chicken”. Lowell George was genius and it is too bad he is no longer with us. The good news is you can hear him in this beauty.
Neil Young & Crazy Horse – Come On Baby Let’s Go Downtown(Live)
Neil Young is a bad ass and he is at his baddest when he is playing with his band Crazy Horse. It is never more evident than on the album “Live At The Fillmore East”. This album only has 6 songs but it clocks in at 43:00 minutes. It is full of big loud guitars and contains an incendiary version of “Down By The River” but my favorite track is “Come On Baby Let’s Go Downtown”. Turn it up loud and enjoy this one.
Nirvana – Where Did You Sleep Last Night(Live)
This is my favorite song off of my favorite Nirvana album. Yes it is a cover of a Lead Belly song but Kurt Cobain makes it all his own. When you combine the subject matter of this song with the unmistakable scream of Kurt Cobain and this song will give you chills. The perfect ending to a classic album from this band.
Mindy Smith – Come To Jesus
I am strangely drawn to songs about religion yet I hate Christian music. One day I will explain it to you. Until then check out this haunting song by Mindy Smith. Mindy gained notoriety by covering Dolly Parton’s “Jolene” on a tribute album and then released this song on her first album. Great song that can make you want to find religion for at least 4 minutes and 13 seconds.
Dwight Yoakam – Miner’s Prayer (Live)
“Dwight Live” is one of my favorite live albums of all time and this version of “Miner’s Prayer” is fantastic. It is just Dwight and his guitar singing about a coal miner praying to live one more day so he can head back to the coal mines another day. If you like the live version you should also check out the version on “Dwight’s Used Records” where he sings this song with Bluegrass great Ralph Stanley singing harmonies.
There you go, my pupils. I have picked songs that range from murder, Jesus, and coal miners in just five songs. I have given you a cover of a Lead Belly song and turned you on to Ralph Stanley. I don’t know what else I can do for you at this point. Check out these songs and see what you think. Feel free to comment on what you like or don’t like.
Later,
Nick

You could have used the word “selection” one more time in the opening paragraph.
Speaking of selections, I have yet to see your selections.
