RM Shuffle for February 5, 2010

Angeline by James McMurtry

This is a truly haunting tale of a song by James McMurtry off his debut album, To Long in The Wasteland, which was produced by John Mellencamp. The sadness of the vocals captures the darkness and despair of this tale of loss and love. It’s a song that truly echoes through the halls of your mind and sticks to your gut. It’s a song with something we all can relate to in some way…about making a decision as a young man and finding out years later it might have not been the right one, but it’s too late to do anything about it now.

You Think You Know Somebody by Todd Snider

This too is a lonely song where the music and lyrics fit perfect. It’s an acoustic song play played on a single guitar and song by a lone singer. To me, this may be Todd best song of all time. It is powerful. I still get chills every time I listen to it. In true-classic Americana story telling fashion, Todd spurns a story of friends, secrets, and death.

Nightswimming by REM

This song comes off Automatic for the People. This song and album were released in the height of their stardom and when REM reigned supreme. This song did not get the airplay that other songs from that album got like, “Everybody Hurts” and “Man of the Moon,” but in my opinion, this is the best song on the album. And actually, this is my favorite REM song of all time. The piano riff is fantastic. The lyrics really capture that special moment in life when we we’re young and the summer was coming to an end and school was about to start again. We were full of life and testosterone and skinny dipping was much easier with our 17 year old bodies and our racing minds.

The Hardest Button to Button by the White Stripes

I popped this one on the other day while on the treadmill. I forgot how much I loved this song until I listened to it again recently. Since then I have listened to it everyday in my car. The guitars are fuzzy and driving, the bass line melodic, and the lyrics are absolutely great. Jack White may be lyrically the “Kurt Cobain” of this new generation of music.

Too Fast for Love by Motley Crue

This song comes off their first album by the same name. If you listen to this song it has a very unusual upbeat that gives it a ton of originality. This song is less glam-rock-metal and moreover, a straighter forward hard-rock song. Many people when listening to this song for the first time are surprised to find out it’s the Crue. It doesn’t sound like Motley Crue’s middle to late 80’s stuff, which to me, is refreshing and worthy of another listen.
