Joe Pug – Messenger

I saw this guy open up for Steve Earle last summer in a 600 seat theater and fell in love with him. It was just him and an acoustic guitar. He had great stage presence, a soulful voice, and incredible lyrics. At the time he only had just released an EP and it was fantastic. His first full length album comes out in a couple of weeks. You can listen to “Messenger” on his website www.joepugmusic.com. If the rest of his album is anything like this song it will be a solid album.

U2 – Trip Through Your Wires

I am not a huge U2 fan but I think the Joshua Tree is a seminal album that still sounds great over 20 years later. “Trip Through Your Wires” is my favorite cut from this album. The song starts out with a fantastic drum and harmonica intro and The Edge actually seems to be playing guitar without a ton of effects. It is a great rock and roll song that I do not get enough of from this band.

The Traveling Wilburys – Tweeter and the Monkey Man

I hope you know the history of this band but in case you don’t the members are Tom Petty, George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, Bob Dylan, and Roy Orbison. I think a lot of times “supergroups” fall short of expectations(Velvet Underground,Chickenfoot). That was not the case with this group. They produced two fine albums. This song is my favorite. Dylan never sounded better and it is a great story telling song. If that was not enough the backing vocals of Lynne, Petty, Orbison, and Harrison are the icing on the cake.

Tom Petty – Free Girl Now

This song is off of the best Tom Petty album you have never heard. For some reason “Echo” is probably the most overlooked album in Tom Petty’s impressive catalog. This album is loaded with nasty tunes. “Free Girl Now” is a straight forward rocker with big guitars and drums. It is a classic example of a what Petty does best. If you like “You Wreck Me” give this song a try. Make sure to play it very loud.

Son Volt – Drown

When Uncle Tupelo imploded Jay Farrar formed Son Volt. “Drown” was the first single from the classic album “Trace” and it was one hell of an introduction to this band. This song is 3:20 of big loud guitars paired up with the Farrar’s unmistakable voice. This song was released 14 years ago and it it still sounds as good today as it did in 1996.
