The Swimming Song – Loudon Wainwright III

The acclaimed folk singer who is also the father of Rufus and Martha Wainwright recorded this song for the 1973 album “Attempted Mustache”. This song probably won’t make it into the songwriters hall of fame but it is a great song that includes a great banjo sound throughout the entire song. There is just something about this song that makes me feel good. Vetiver also does a great cover of this song.

Joe Cocker is one of the great voices in rock history. Check out his cover of “The Letter” originally recorded by The Box Tops. This video is taken from the “Mad Dogs & Englishmen” tour. Cocker assembled a 30 piece band for the tour which included Leon Russell as the band leader. This tour produced the “Mad Dogs & Englishmen” album which is one of the finest live albums ever recorded.

You would not expect the son of Richard and Linda Thompson to make a straight up country record but that is exactly what Teddy Thompson did on his third album “Up Front and Down Low”. Other than the song “Down Low” this album is comprised of all classic country songs from some of Thompson’s favorite artists. Thompson is not what you would call a country singer but he makes a better country record than 99.9% of the artists in Nashville. It is a shame this album did not get the attention it deserves.
