RM Shuffle for March 10th, 2009

Alejandro Escovedo – Castanets

Here is another of the hundreds of great musicians from the fertile Texas music scene. This song is off of the 2001 release “A Man Under The Influence”. I am pretty sure Escovedo was listening to Chuck Berry when he recorded this song. It sounds like Chuck could be playing guitar himself on this track.

Ben Harper – Two Hands of a Prayer

When I saw Ben in 2007 this is the song he opened the show with. I had never heard the song before. 24 hours later I owned the song and have played it hundreds of times since. “Steal My Kisses” is the most popular song on this album but “Two Hands of a Prayer” is the best song on “Burn To Shine” and I think one of Ben’s finest songs to date.

Billy Bragg & Wilco – California Stars

Folk singer Billy Bragg and Wilco made two albums using Woody Guthrie lyrics that had never been put to music and both albums are incredible. “California Stars” is off of the the 1st album “Mermaid Avenue”. There is something about this song that makes you feel good when you listen to it and it has become a staple at Wilco’s live shows over the years.

Hootie and the Blowfish – Michelle Post

Before you make fun of me for putting this song on here give it a listen. This is my favorite Hootie song. It is a 2:20 country jam with plenty of banjo. It is unlike anything they play on the radio and every time I hear it I want them to make an entire of album of music just like this song.

James Taylor – Fire and Rain

I am sure you have all heard this song a million times just like me but I still love it. It is impossible to get sick of this song. I also like that the song was allegedly written while Taylor was in a mental institution. If that is the case I would say this is the greatest song of all time that was written in a mental institution. If it is not true it is still a great song.
