The Swimming Song – Loudon Wainwright III

The acclaimed folk singer who is also the father of Rufus and Martha Wainwright recorded this song for the 1973 album “Attempted Mustache”. This song probably won’t make it into the songwriters hall of fame but it is a great song that includes a great banjo sound throughout the entire song. There is just something about this song that makes me feel good. Vetiver also does a great cover of this song.

Space Captain – The Black Crowes

If you are a fan of this band you know they literally play hundreds of covers in their live shows. “Space Captain” was made famous by Joe Cocker on his “Mad Dogs & Englishmen” album and the Crowes version sounds very close to the original including the crazy hand claps and howling at different points in the song.

Thirteen – Big Star

I figured I would include a Big Star song this week in honor of the passing of lead singer Alex Chilton. As I have said before this band practically invented the “Power Pop” genre and do not get near enough respect. This is one of my favorite Big Star songs.

Blue Jean – David Bowie

Way back in the 1980′s when I did not know who in the hell David Bowie was I saw this video on MTV and loved the video and the song. I have never been a huge Bowie fan although he has grown on me in the last few years but this song has always been a favorite of mind ever since the first time I saw the video in the 80′s.

Comin’ Home – Delaney & Bonnie/Eric Clapton

Clapton played with Delaney & Bonnie for a spell and even toured with them. He basically assembled Derek and the Dominoes using their band and Duane Allman. Clapton recorded this Delaney & Bonnie song with them and it is fantastic. Clapton’s guitar work never sounded better.
