Alejandro Escovedo – Castanets

Here is another of the hundreds of great musicians from the fertile Texas music scene. This song is off of the 2001 release “A Man Under The Influence”. I am pretty sure Escovedo was listening to Chuck Berry when he recorded this song. It sounds like Chuck could be playing guitar himself on this track.

Some of My Favorite Forgotten Classic Tunes:

Isn’t it Time – The Baby’s
Not available on Amazon
The Baby’ are one of those bands that only made music for a short period of time in the late 70’s, but what they did in the brief period was pretty amazing. Over the years they have been forgotten by many and that is a shame. They really created some great music and I believe they are deserve a better place in history than they have; take a listen, this song is unbelievable.

Joe Pug – Messenger

I saw this guy open up for Steve Earle last summer in a 600 seat theater and fell in love with him. It was just him and an acoustic guitar. He had great stage presence, a soulful voice, and incredible lyrics. At the time he only had just released an EP and it was fantastic. His first full length album comes out in a couple of weeks. You can listen to “Messenger” on his website www.joepugmusic.com. If the rest of his album is anything like this song it will be a solid album.

Angeline by James McMurtry

This is a truly haunting tale of a song by James McMurtry off his debut album, To Long in The Wasteland, which was produced by John Mellencamp. The sadness of the vocals captures the darkness and despair of this tale of loss and love. It’s a song that truly echoes through the halls of your mind and sticks to your gut. It’s a song with something we all can relate to in some way…about making a decision as a young man and finding out years later it might have not been the right one, but it’s too late to do anything about it now.

Hopefully you all enjoyed Aaron’s selections from his Shuffle last week. He had some interesting selections that I was not expecting. I will try to match the quality of his selections this week in my shuffle. So without further delay here are my selections for the week.

Little Feat – Roll Um Easy

I have taken a liking to Little Feat over the past couple of years. I am sad it took me so long to jump on their bandwagon, but better late than never. Roll Um Easy is my favorite track off of the seminal album “Dixie Chicken”. Lowell George was genius and it is too bad he is no longer with us. The good news is you can hear him in this beauty.
