Rock Minutes is back from vacation and we are ready to roll. We are going to get your week started off right with a pretty incredible version of The Band’s classic song “The Weight”. This version is from the Elvis Costello show “Spectacle” which is fantastic if you have never seen it. This version features a monster lineup of great musicians. Elvis Costello, Ray Lamontagne, Richard Thompson, Levon Helm, Larry Campbell, Nick Lowe and Allen Toussaint are all featured on this song.

This will not be the last time you hear about this band this week. I just saw them in concert and will be telling you all about it. In the meantime turn up the volume on your computer and feel the power of The Black Keys.

Sorry no embedding on this one:

This week’s video comes courtesy of avid Rock Minutes reader Thor Peterson. Thor e-mailed me this video a couple of weeks ago and I thought it was great. If you regularly read Rock Minutes you know that the Avett Brothers are one of my favorite bands and I believe you will be hearing a lot more from them for years to come. This version of them playing “10,000 Words” in the back of truck is pretty cool.

If you ever doubted the guitar playing ability of Prince you will not after you watch him destroy the solo on “While My Guitar Gently Weeps”. This was recorded at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony for George Harrison. Check out the reaction of George’s son Dhani as Prince get the f&%k off and check out Prince’s exit when the song is over. Legend has it that Prince had never heard this song until the day before he played it. One of the greatest Rock and Roll Hall of Fame performances of all time.

The Black Crowes are releasing a new album next week called “Croweology” it is a record of acoustic versions of all of their hits, some songs from deep in their catalog and some covers. In celebration of my favorite band putting out a new album check out this video from the band. It was 1992 and the band had just released the follow up to “Shake Your Money Maker”. They had fired a guitar player, hired a guitar and keyboard player and they were as tight as they have ever been. Check out “No Speak No Slave” and see how they started their shows on that tour. This version of the band was a much more aggressive and angry version of the band you see today.
